Miller, William

Miller, William
(1782–1849)
   Cult Founder.
Miller was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and spent much of his life as a farmer. He was licensed as a Baptist preacher in 1833 and he was the author of Evidence from Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ about the Year 1843. This was the beginning of the American Adventist movement which was to produce several Churches. The most prominent of these was that of the Seventh Day Adventists. They believe that the end of the age will come when the Church has reached a predetermined size. At that point the righteous, both living and dead, will be taken to spend a thousand years in Heaven while Satan will rule the Earth. Then, Jesus Christ and the Saints will destroy the wicked and a New Earth will be created. Adventists celebrate the Sabbath on Saturdays; they follow the Old Testament food laws; they do not smoke or drink and they try to avoid all ‘worldly entertainments’. Miller himself abandoned the movement he started when his deadline for the Second Coming had passed.
